5. Frodo and Sam on Mount Doom after the Ring is destroyed

"Sam: “Rosie Cotton dancing. She had ribbons in her hair. If ever I was to marry someone, it would’ve been her. It would have been her.”  Frodo: “I’m glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things.”"

Sam carries Frodo up Mount Doom, and then they are attacked by Gollum. Frodo finally makes it to the edge and is ready to throw the Ring into the fires of Mount Doom and end this once and for all. Instead, Frodo puts the Ring on, and luckily Gollum bites his finger off and falls into Mount Doom, destroying the Ring.

Sam and Frodo race to safety as the mountain explodes. They’re left on the edge of the mountainside while lava rages past them. This moment was set up just a few minutes before when Sam asks Frodo if he can remember the Shire. Frodo says that he can’t, but now, the Ring is destroyed, and Frodo reveals that he can see it in his mind; the Shire, Bag End, etc.

As Frodo reflects on what he remembers, Sam reminds himself and Frodo of everything he sacrificed to be here and to go on this journey. He is clearly mourning a future he doesn’t think he’ll get to have. We know that he eventually will marry Rosie, but it’s a heart-wrenching moment to see Sam, at the end of all things, break down. Frodo then picks him up and reminds Sam that he’s thankful to be with him at, as he says, “the end of all things.”
