Outlander stars weigh in on Tom Christie’s return from the dead
By Ariba Bhuvad
This week’s episode of Outlander, “A Most Uncomfortable Woman,” brings back a familiar face that we had thought dead: Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones)! The last time we saw him a couple of episodes ago, Tom was going to be executed for the murder of his daughter Malva.
tom was willing to take the blame even though he did not commit the crime for the sake of Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), a woman he had fallen in love with. There’s just something about Claire that the men of Outlander cannot resist.
In any case, Tom lived to see another day because he proved to be useful to the governor, who was dealing with the coming Revolutionary War. Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan spoke to TVLine about this plot twist!
Outlander star Caitriona Balfe weighs in on Tom Christie’s surprising kiss
We’ve seen over the years that Claire is not the type of woman who gets rattled easily. However, when she bumps into Tom and realizes that he is still alive, she’s shaken to the core.
Tom, meanwhile, thought Claire and Jamie had died in the fire as Fraser’s Ridge and is so overjoyed to see Claire that he kisses her right then and there. “What’s so surprising is the way he reveals himself when he reveals more about his life, the pain that he suffered, and you get to understand why he acts the way he does, and then, you know, when he makes an overture towards Claire, it’s a really fun, very confusing-for-Claire moment,” Balfe said. “Mark Lewis Jones is so amazing. He’s been such a dream to work with, and we’ve enjoyed having him on the show so much.”
Jones also weighed in on this moment. “It was very funny to do ’cause we get a flash of old Tom,” he told TV Insider. “I think when he kisses her and kind of catches himself, he’s almost more shocked and surprised than she is. And so you kind of get a flash of the pious, uptight, broomstick-up-his-behind Tom, you know?”
Sam Heughan says time has made Jamie Fraser “calmer”
As a fan of Outlander and of Jamie Fraser, I couldn’t get over how supportive Jamie is of this man who has confessed his love for Claire. You would think he’d be jealous or angry, but there is almost none of that. Jamie has definitely changed since season 1, when he would have reacted more aggressively.
“Jamie, over time, he’s aged,” Heughan said. “He’s become calmer. Also, their relationship is so interesting. There was butting heads, and they have such a long history, going back to Ardsmuir… I think there’s actually a mutual respect between these two men. They’re just on different sides, right? And of course, they both love Claire, because they’re just genuinely good people. They’re just from different sides.”
Where does one find themselves a man like Mr. Jamie Fraser? Talk about secure!
Will Tom Christie return on Outlander?
So is this the last we’ll see of Tom Christie? “I would always come back, but it’s not my decision,” Jones said. “I’m not aware of any plans whatsoever, and if that’s it and that was my journey as an actor playing Tom Christie, then I’m very happy.”
While the Tom Christie storyline seems to have wrapped up for now, there is a lot on the horizon for Outlander. This week’s episode ended with Claire and Jamie arriving at Fort Ticonderoga, which has interrupted their plans to sail back to Scotland.
What will happen next? Will the war prevent a return to Scotland? And will Jamie come face-to-face with his son William (Charles Vandervaart)? Tune in to find out as new episodes of Outlander premiere every Friday on Starz.
