Get out the lightsabers and get hyped: a new trailer for Ahsoka just dropped! The next Star Wars series heading to Disney+ is all about fan-favorite Jedi outcast Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), who’s seemingly getting the band back together from the Star Wars Rebels animated series in order to fight one of the galaxy’s most dangerous villains: Thrawn, the master strategist and “heir to the Empire” following Palpatine’s demise in Return of the Jedi.

This latest trailer for Ahsoka gives us a lot of exciting stuff to mull over. Watch it, then we’ll discuss:

Ahsoka and the Rebels gang reunite in new trailer: “Once a rebel, always a rebel”

We’ve known for a while now that Ahsoka would essentially function as a continuation of the Star Wars Rebels animated series thanks to inclusion of characters like Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), but I have to admit I’m still a little surprised by how much this latest trailer feels like an extension of Rebels. From Sabine and Ahsoka discussing their past together to Hera lamenting how she’s spent most of her life fighting in wars, this seems made for superfans. Thrawn is even played by Lars Mikkelson, the same person who voiced the character in Rebels!

Speaking of Thrawn, this trailer gives us our first good look at this face. It’ll be interesting to see how Mikkelson brings the iconic character to life in live-action.

Ahsoka will follow in the footsteps of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series with a two-episode premiere. The entire season only spans eight episodes, so that’s a sizable chunk of the story right out of the gate!

Dave Filoni: Ahsoka was trained by “the greatest Jedi of all time,” Anakin Skywalker

We’re just over a month out from the release of Ahsoka, so expect things to pick up steam from here on out. For example, the official Star Wars YouTube channel recently released a short featurette titled “Journey to Ahsoka,” which includes footage from various events and interviews with some of the major movers and shakers behind the series.

But you know Star Wars fans: give them something to quibble over, and quibble they shall. In particular, some have taken issue with Ahsoka Tano creator Dave Filoni saying that she trained under “the greatest Jedi of all time” Anakin  Skywalker, who was Ahsoka’s master during the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series. Not everyone likes that descriptor, since Anakin went on to do some pretty bad stuff.

From where I’m sitting, giving Anakin that moniker is just fine. Sure, Obi-Wan has a better mullet and Yoda is wiser, but Anakin is still the “Chosen One,” even if he turned into a villain. Filoni can get away with calling him whatever he wants.

Star Wars: Ahoska drops its first two episodes on Disney+ on August 23. All four seasons of Star Wars Rebels are available on Disney+, if you want to brush up on who all these characters are before the new show comes out.
