Unlike the Emmys, the Critics Choice Association nominate House of the Dragon stars

The 2023 Emmy nominations were announced the other day, and HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon picked up eight nods in the following categories:
- Outstanding Drama Series
- Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Period Or Fantasy Program (One Hour)
- Outstanding Cinematography For A Series (One Hour)
- Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes
- Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)
- Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup
- Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour)
- Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie
That’s not bad — the Outstanding Drama Series nomination is especially noteworthy, since that’s unofficially considered the premiere award of the night. But still, I can’t help but notice that none of the actors were nominated for awards, despite folks like Milly Alcock (Young Rhaenyra Targaryen), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) and Paddy Considine (King Viserys Targaryen) all doing excellent work.
House of the Dragon stars shut out at Emmys
But while those actors may have been snubbed by the Emmys, at least D’Arcy and Smith were recognized by the Hollywood Critics Association for the HCA TV Awards:
Best Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Drama Series
- Angela Bassett – 9-1-1 (FOX)
- Erika Christensen – Will Trent (ABC)
- Melanie Lynskey – Yellowjackets (Showtime)
- Juliette Lewis – Yellowjackets (Showtime)
- Kelly Reilly – Yellowstone (Paramount Network)
- Sarah Snook – Succession – (HBO)
- Bella Ramsey – The Last of Us (HBO)
- Emma D’Arcy – House of the Dragon (HBO)
Best Supporting Actor in a Broadcast Network or Cable Drama Series
- Alexander Skarsgård – Succession (HBO)
- Cole Hauser – Yellowstone (Paramount Network)
- Elijah Wood – Yellowjackets (Showtime)
- Jeremy Sisto – FBI (CBS)
- Jonathan Banks – Better Call Saul (AMC)
- Luke Grimes – Yellowstone (Paramount Network)
- Matthew Macfadyen – Succession (HBO)
- Matt Smith – House of the Dragon (HBO)
- Theo James – The White Lotus (HBO)
- Wes Bentley – Yellowstone (Paramount Network)
It would have been nice to see the House of the Dragon stars honored at this year’s Emmys, but if subsequent seasons of the show continue the momentum started by the first, the awards will probably come.
The Emmy Awards will air on September 18 on NBC. The HCA TV Awards were going to be given out on August 12 and 13, but have been put on hold in the midst of the uncertainty surrounding the writers strike and the actors strike.
