House of the Dragon fans fume over stars like Emma D’Arcy getting snubbed by the Emmys
By Dan Selcke
The nominations of the 2023 Emmy awards were announced the other day, and HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon did pretty well, racking up nine nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series.
However, many fans wanted to see some recognition for the stars of the show, and that was not forthcoming. None of the actors on the series got a nomination, including heavy hitters like Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Paddy Considine (Viserys Targaryen) and Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen).
It’s insane that Paddy Considine didn’t get more awards recognition for his performance as King Viserys Targaryen
For my money, if only one actor from the show could get an Emmy nomination, it should have been Considine, who did an excellent of portraying a conflicted king who wasted away over the course of the first season. And plenty of fans agree with me.
A lot of fans are citing the scene where King Viserys walked into the Iron Throne room for the final time, which they should, because it was amazing and deserving of recognition.

Next to Considine, the other actor I thought would be a shoo-in for Emmy recognition was Emma D’Arcy, who brought a lot of texture and depth to their performance of Rhaenyra Targaryen, a princess who has to fight to be taken seriously as a contender for the Iron Throne.
A lot of fans pointed to D’Arcy’s performance during Rhaenyra’s birthing scenes as evidence that they were snubbed:
Others called for recognition for Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower) as well:
Another fan bemoaned that Milly Alcock, who played the younger version of Rhaenyra Targaryen, didn’t get any recognition:
And finally there’s Matt Smith, who gave a fiery, memorable performance as Daemon Targaryen:
If the second season of House of the Dragon is as good or better as the first, D’Arcy and Smith could still get Emmy nominations (or even wins) later. It’s a shame that Alcock and Considine were passed over, though, since they won’t be back.
The Emmys will air on NBC on September 18…if they aren’t cancelled by the ongoing writers and actors strikes, anyway.
