Hayley Atwell was frustrated by her cameo in Doctor Strange 2

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came out last year to general acclaim from critics and audiences. One of the highlights of the film is when Wanda Maximoff, driven mad by her encounters with the multiverse, single-handedly takes down a set of Avengers from an alternate universe, including Professor X (Patrick Stewart), a version of Reed Richards played John Krasinski, and Captain Carter, an alternate version of Captain America played by Hayley Atwell.

Captain Carter was first introduced in the animated Marvel series What If…?, but Atwell has been around the MCU for years. She made her debut as Peggy Carter way back in the first Captain America movie in 2011, and even had her own TV show called Agent Carter, which ran for two seasons on ABC.

It’s possible that her cameo as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange 2 will be Atwell’s last live action appearance in the MCU, and it doesn’t sound like that sits well with her. “I felt like I had much more to do in the What If…? animation series,” Atwell said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I loved that in that, they were able to give her more to do as Captain Carter/Captain Britain. So, it felt like a frustrating moment in Dr Strange because you are like ‘This is it…'[she mimes going to say more and then being stopped]’… [and then] No, you don’t.'”

“It wasn’t my choice when she is like ‘I could do this all day’ and it is followed by immediately getting cut in half by a frisbee.”

I get that Atwell might be a touch frustrated to come in and suit up for what is essentially a gimmicky death scene. But on the other hand, that death scene was pretty fun. “I get so much slack [from fans],” she said. “It wasn’t my choice when she is like ‘I could do this all day’ and it is followed by immediately getting cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience is like ‘She can’t do it all day’.”

At least Atwell enjoyed the stunts involved. “She [Peggy] had less to do than she did before she had the shield, but what was great was the coming in and doing those stunt things, when she does the very quick run and then sliding on my knees and coming over backwards,” Atwell said. “We had this expert team of stuntmen and women who oversaw all my training, so it meant I was fit for purpose.”

Atwell will return as Captain Marvel in the second season of What If…? There’s no release date for that as of yet.
