David Tennant “excited” about returning to Doctor Who
By Ashley Hurst
Later this year, Doctor Who will celebrate its 60th anniversary. To mark this milestone, showrunner Russell T. Davies is bringing back David Tennant — who played the Tenth Doctor back in the late 2000s — as the Fourteenth Doctor, along with his companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). After that, the baton will get passed to Ncuti Gatwa, who will play the Fifteenth Doctor on a more permanent basis.
Fans got something of a shock in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode as the Doctor. Everyone expected a new face when she regenerated, but rather, we were greeted with the familiar face of David Tennant. Fans were surprised, then elated, and then very curious.
David Tennant “excited” about returning to the Doctor Who universe!
Tennant spent three seasons as the Doctor and later returned for a special alongside Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith. He’s not done yet. In fact, his story with Donna Noble was never really wrapped up. He left her behind, saying that if she ever recognizes him again, there would be dire consequences.
Per Daily Mail, Tennant appeared on the talk show This Morning and played it coy about what fans can expect from the specials. “I mean beyond that I’m doing it… probably not [discuss the plot], no. But that’s the fun of it, isn’t it?”
"Hopefully it was a bit of a surprise when I showed up. That when Jodie Whittaker regenerated into me, it was a bit of a surprise. So we wanted to sort of keep some shocks. But Catherine Tate is back, so it’s a bit like 15 years never happened to be honest!"
Turns out the idea for Tennant to return to Doctor Who was manifesting for many years. “I think we thought at the beginning maybe let’s do it as a one-off for old time’s sake,” Tennant said. “And then suddenly it became a bit more than that and we got back to a bit of a run. So we did three episodes.” So far as playing this role again, Tennant said it felt “weirdly familiar.”
David Tennant talks working alongside his son Ty on Good Omens
David Tennant’s 21-year-old son Ty is also an actor and has had quite a career so far. From playing Aegon II Targaryen in House of the Dragon to Edwin Paine in Doom Patrol, he’s already established himself in the industry. And in the upcoming second season of Good Omens, he’ll act alongside his father for the first time.
Of course, David Tennant only has good things to say about that experience. “He’s really good. He’s very talented and annoyingly good looking. So it’s lovely and it’s great to get to work together.”
Good Omens season 2 premieres on July 28 on Amazon Prime Video. Doctor Who returns with David Tennant’s specials in November! And after that…
Doctor Who season 15 finishes filming
Ncuti Gatwa will probably appear as the Fifteenth Doctor near the end of the specials, but his era will really begin in 2024, when Doctor Who season 15 hits the airwaves. As it happens, Davies just announced that they’re done filming season 15, complete with a behind-the-scenes pic:
