Get ready for school, because we’re shipping off to superhero college! San Diego Comic-Con is happening this weekend, and while you shouldn’t expect to see any actors or screenwriters there thanks to the historic Hollywood double strike that’s underway, studios are still using the occasion for big announcements.

The first is that Gen V, a spinoff of The Boys set at a university for aspiring heroes, has gotten a release date and poster! Gen V is hitting Prime Video on September 29.

Gen V is coming out in late September, and a new teaser is landing next week

This is a welcome announcement, since we’ve been waiting quite a while for news about Gen V after the show’s official Twitter account trolled fans back in February that it would arrive “sometime between now and December 31.” Now we know, so mark your calendar! A teaser will drop next Monday, July 24.

Gen V is set between season 3 and 4 of The Boys. It stars Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas and Marco Pigossi. It will also feature appearances from  The Boys stars like Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett) and P.J. Byrne (Adam Bourke). Here’s the official synopsis:

"From the world of ‘The Boys’ comes ‘Gen V,’ which explores the training of the first generation of superheroes to know about Compound V, and that their powers were injected into them, rather than God-given. These young, competitive heroes put their physical and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the school’s highly coveted top ranking. They quickly come to learn that ambition comes with sacrifice, and the difference between right and wrong is not as clear as they once believed. When the university’s dark secrets come to light, the students must come to grips with what type of heroes they are going to become."

As for The Boys proper, don’t expect to season 4 anytime too soon. While the show’s fourth season did wrap production earlier this year, showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed that post-production was on hold due to the writers strike. Now with actors on strike as well, everything’s pretty much at a standstill. Cast members from The Boys are on the picket lines outside of Amazon Studios.

The first three episodes of Gen V drop on September 29 on Prime Video. After that, new episodes will premiere weekly until the season finale on Friday, November 3.

Amazon releases first poster for Invincible season 2

As long as we’re talking about gritty superhero series on Amazon Prime Video, we just got the poster for the second season of Invincible, based on Robert Kirkman’s earnestly subversive comic:

Still no release date for Invincible season 2, but it should be coming some time this year.

The Boys season 4 is “very intense”

Back to The Boys universe, star Jack Quaid (Hughie) is promising something special in season 4. “It’s my favorite season we’ve ever shot,” Quaid told Esquire. “It’s a very intense season. You really get to mine the depth of every character—and it still has those ‘What just happened?!’ moments. Audiences are still going to be surprised and will be really into the direction that it takes. We take some chances that I think are really awesome. It’s our best one yet.”

There’s no release date for The Boys season 4 yet. The sooner the unions and studios come to a fair agreement, the sooner we’ll get one.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
