One Piece is one of the most successful manga series of all time. It was then turned into one of the most successful anime series of all time. Can it also be one of the most successful live-action shows of all time?

Netflix is going to find out. Check out the trailer for the new show below:

One Piece is an adventure tale set on the high seas. Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) is an aspiring pirate who puts together a ragtag crew to go in search of a horde of loot known as the One Piece treasure.

One Piece live-action remake release date

As you see in the trailer, Monkey can stretch his body in all kinds of wacky ways. Most of the characters on the show have outlandish powers like this, and part of the fun of the manga and anime is watching them go up against each other in one-on-one fights.

This is a pretty standard trope for anime, where things are very stylized by nature, but can be tricky in live action, which reads as more realistic. It’s rare for an anime to successfully make the jump to live action, but Netflix is determined to make it happen. It’s already tried its hand at adapting popular anime like Death Note and Cowboy Bebop. Neither of those quite hit. Can One Piece break through?

We’ll find out when the show premieres on August 31.
