Doctor Who characters sing “Barbie Girl” in fan edit, because why not?
By Dan Selcke
Barbie is the most popular movie in the world right now, and rightly so. The internet is having a great time celebrating the movie, including by making funny fan edits like this one, where characters from 60 years of Doctor Who history sing the song “Barbie Girl” by Aqua:
This video was made specifically to honor Ncuti Gatwa, who appears in Barbie as one of many Kens and who will appear as the Fifteenth Doctor come 2024.
We won’t be watching Gatwa’s Doctor for a while, but showrunner Russell T Davies is already out there getting fans hyped up. Writing in Doctor Who Magazine, he talked about a special guest star who will show up towards the end of the upcoming fourteenth season. “There’s a great set in the very last block of the 2024 series. It only appears for one scene. But a crucial scene,” he wrote. “[The set was used] with a really lovely guest star, unseen by the public, unannounced in the press, cos the scene takes place secretly within the studio, so you’ve got a nice surprise to come…”
"And then! Look! It’s me! Wandering onto the set. Coming to have a little shufti. (But really to meet the guest star, cos, y’know, famous, okay?)"
There are already a couple of famous people confirmed to be appearing on Doctor Who in the near future, including Neil Patrick Harris and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon. We don’t know who this other person is, but kudos for Davies for half-leaking it like this. The guy knows how to get fans interested.
David Tennant says his Doctor is “not necessarily the same version of the Doctor that I was before”
But before Gatwa makes his debut as the Fifteenth Doctor, David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth in a series of specials airing at the end of this year. Last time Tennant was on the show years ago, he played the Tenth Doctor, and a lot has happened since then.
“The Doctor’s been three different people in the meantime, so I’m not necessarily the same version of the Doctor that I was before,” Tennant told Doctor Who Magazine. “I’m not the Tenth Doctor now, I’m the Fourteenth. Well, strictly speaking we don’t know what the actual number is anymore, do we?”
Joining Tennant is Catherine Tate returning as the Doctor’s companion Donna. Neither Tate nor Tennant have watched any of the episodes that came after their runs in preparation. “Neither me nor Donna know what’s going on. I believe my soul is too lowbrow to comprehend what happens,” Tate said. “My intellect is too low-rent. It’s quite tricky for me. So it almost would have been counterproductive to put all those adventures into my head.”
I will never get tired of actors finding different ways to say, “I don’t need to know the show to do the job and if I get paid it’s really all the same to me.”
Anyway, expect David Tennant’s Doctor Who specials in November and Ncuti Gatwa’s season 14 sometime next year. We don’t have exact release dates for either yet.
