George R.R. Martin wishes Paddy Considine had an Emmy nom for “magnificent” performance
By Dan Selcke
The other week, the Television Academy announced the 2023 Emmy nominations. HBO dominated the field, with shows like The Last of Us, Succession and The White Lotus nabbing lots of nods each.
House of the Dragon also got a bunch of nominations, including one of Outstanding Drama Series, the top award of the night. Here’s the full list for the Game of Thrones prequel series:
- Outstanding Drama Series
- Cinematography for a Series (One Hour)
- Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes
- Period and/or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)
- Prosthetic Makeup
- Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More)
- Sound Editing For a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour)
- Special Visual Effects in a Season or Movie
House of the Dragon: Inside the Episode was also nominated for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series. Not a bad haul!
George R.R. Martin: It’s “heartbreaking” that House of the Dragon star Paddy Considine isn’t nominated for an Emmy
Writing the other day on his Not a Blog, Fire & Blood author George R.R. Martin congratulated the cast and crew for the recognition. “They did some amazing work, and this recognition is well deserved. Come Emmy night, I hope some of them get to take home a golden lady… but win or lose, it IS an honor just to be nominated.” He also continued to abbreviate House of the Dragon as “HOT D,” which will never not make me laugh.
So Martin is happy, but at the same time, it’s hard not to wish the show got even more love, particularly for some of the writers, directors and actors, none of whom were nominated. “You don’t get to contend for Best Dramatic Series unless you have some great actors, directors, and writers working of you,” he wrote.
"Most of our team will have other shots at the prize in seasons to come, to be sure ((I lost six Emmy Awards before I won my first)), but that’s not true for Paddy Considine, alas, not unless Ryan brings King Viserys back as a White Walker — and that’s heartbreaking. My gods, his portrayal was magnificent. He earned a shelf of trophies for episode eight alone."
I’m fully in agreement that Paddy Considine should have been nominated for his performance as King Viserys Targaryen, particularly since he won’t be back for season 2. Ah well.
The Emmys air September 18 on Fox…or at least that’s the plan for now. With both actors and writers on strike in Hollywood, things could change.
