Game of Thrones ended a few years back, but HBO has kept the series alive in the minds of fans through its prequel series House of the Dragon. Another prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is also in development. Westeros isn’t going anywhere.

There’s even a Game of Thrones stage play in the works! Yes, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin is working with a team of Broadway veterans on a play about the Tourney at Harrenhal, the fateful event that kicked off Robert’s Rebellion several years before the main events of Game of Thrones. That means we could see younger versions of characters like Ned Stark and Cersei Lannister, as well as spend a lot of time with Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.

If you’re gonna have a play set in the world of Game of Thrones, this is the one. It’s all centrally located in one area, there are lots of characters to play with, and plenty of opportunities for drama. We can’t know what the finished product will look like, but on a conceptual level, I would see this.

The Iron Throne will feature younger versions of iconic Game of Thrones characters

We hadn’t heard much about the play in a while, but Martin gave us an unexpected update the other day on his Not a Blog:

"Last week we had a great meeting with the producers on THE IRON THRONE, the stage play we’ve been working on the past few years.  The scripts for that one are coming along well, and it’s got me very excited.   SAG-AFTRA covers television and film, but not the stage, so the strike has no impact there.   Maybe we will even be able to bring the show to the West End by… well, no, better not say, do not want to jinx the project."

Unless I’m mistaken, this is the first time anyone has mentioned the working title of the play! The Iron Throne

…honestly, I think I’d prefer something related to the Tourney at Harrenhal. “The Iron Throne” is already the title of the Game of Thrones series finale. But of course, it could all make sense once we see the thing on stage.

There’s no release date yet for The Iron Throne, but it’s good to know it’s still in the works.
