No, James Gunn isn’t make a live-action Justice League movie (yet)
By Dan Selcke
The DC Universe is in a state of flux. Hell, the whole superhero-industrial complex is in a state of flux, but let’s limit the discussion to DC for now. Peter Safran and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn currently have the job of tearing the whole thing down and rebuilding it anew. This will start with Gunn’s upcoming movie Superman: Legacy, but there are a lot more projects to come after that.
We haven’t seen a ton of tangible output yet, and in that absence, rumors have begun to swirl. Happily, Gunn has never been shy about swatting down unsubstantiated reports. He’s being a lot of that lately over on Threads, Facebook’s answer to Twitter.
For instance, Gunn got a lot of attention after it was announced that DC characters like Green Lantern, Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific would appear in Superman: Legacy. That’s a lot of characters for what’s supposed to be a Superman movie. Was this actually going to be a live-action Justice League film? “No,” Gunn answered on Threads. Well, okay then.
Why are Green Lantern and other heroes in Superman: Legacy?
Ah, but surely there’s something more to it than just writing in characters because you want to? One report claimed that Warner Bros. Discovery was stacking the new film full of DC icons so that DC Studios would become more attracted to buyers. Gunn’s response to that? “Of course not.”
Alright, he’s making himself clear. “They fit the story I’m telling,” Gunn wrote. “Story always comes first.”
I’m sure that’s true, although given that WBD is trying to build out a whole universe here, I’m sure they won’t be upset to have actors already signed up to play these characters, just in case Superman: Legacy is a big hit and spinoffs sound like a good idea. The movie is scheduled to come out on July 11, 2025.
