It’s that time again, folk:. Rumors are once again circulating that Tobey Maguire could return as Spider-Man to finally complete a fourth solo movie as the web-slinging hero. Does this rumor have any substance? Could we actually see Tobey Maguire return?

Starting his journey in 2002, Tobey Maguire completed a trilogy of Spider-Man movies, each directed by Sam Raimi. The trilogy is widely regarded as one of the best the superhero genre has to offer, even if the third film was a bit of a mess. A fourth movie was said to be in the works, but it was eventually scrapped in 2010. Maguire would later return for a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) alongside other versions of the hero played by Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. That fueled a new wave of rumors about Maguire returning to action.

Interest in Maguire’s Spidey has never really gone away. Since his triumphant return in No Way Home, fans have been wondering if Marvel Studios is willing to give him another outing. According to Thomas Haden Church, who played Sandman in Spider-Man 3 and No Way Home, there’s still a chance Spider-Man 4 could happen.

“There’s always been some kind of… I’ve heard rumors… that Sam Raimi was going to do another [Spider-Man movie] with Tobey [Maguire] and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo,” Church told ComicBook.com.

Of course, this is far from confirmation, but we’ll take what we can get!

Sam Raimi doesn’t rule out Spider-Man 4

As for Raimi himself, he’s previously hinted at the possibility of returning to work alongside Maguire. Raimi recently returned to the Marvel universe as the director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

“I’ve come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups,” Raimi told MoviePilot last year. “I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now.“

Right now, Marvel Studios and Sony are primarily focused on making more Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland in the titular role. That said, with the way it’s going, I don’t think we can ever completely rule out another return for Maguire. Our fingers are crossed!
