Neil Gaiman would be writing Good Omens season 3 “right now” if not for the strikes

The second season of Good Omens dropped in its entirety on Amazon this past Friday, catching fans up with fallen angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), risen demon Crowley (David Tennant), and a host of other celestial beings.

The new episodes seemed to have gone over pretty well. Will there be a third season? Well, there better, because season 2 basically ends on a cliffhanger. According to writer Neil Gaiman, the third season is “planned and plotted,” but he’s not working on anything more at the moment on account of Hollywood writers (and actors) being on strike:

Of course, even if actors and writers weren’t on strike, there’s no guarantee that we would get a third season of Good Omens. Amazon has not yet officially renewed the show; it will surely be watching closely to see how many people tune in for season 2. Although even if it’s giant hit, a renewal announcement won’t mean much if no writers or actors are willing to work on yet more episodes. Quite the sticky wicket Hollywood has gotten itself into here.

Good Omens season 3 is the sequel to Good Omens season 1…okay…

The first season of Good Omens was based on the book of the same name by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. They’d kicked around ideas for a sequel, but didn’t get to write it before Pratchett died in 2015.

So Gaiman forged on alone with season 2 of the Good Omens Amazon show, building on the foundation he and Pratchatt had already laid.

Only apparently we haven’t yet seen Gaiman and Pratchett’s ideas for a Good Omens sequel. That’s coming in season 3; season 2 was merely a bridge, as Gaiman explained on Twitter X:

Honestly, I think it’s a little lame for Gaiman and company to produce a whole season of TV just to get us to the start of a sequel idea, particularly when there’s no guarantee we’ll ever get that sequel. We’ll keep our fingers crossed, first that the studios will cut a fair deal with the writers, and then for Good Omens season 3 to get off the ground.
