Between playing fallen angel Crowley in Good Omens season 2 and making his triumphant return to Doctor Who for its 60th anniversary, this is a big year for David Tennant. The new season of Good Omens was a risky foray from the get-go; it’s not based on the original book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, but rather an idea for a sequel they noodled years before Pratchett died in 2015. Even so, the new season has been hugely popular and a worthy successor to the original story.

Gaiman wrote the new season with John Finnemore. Speaking to Variety, star David Tennant revealed that Gaiman was thinking ahead to season 2 even while he was filming the first season:

"During the filming of the first one, Neil would drop little hints about the notions they had for a prospective sequel, the title of which would have been ‘668: The Neighbour of the Beast,’ which is a pretty solid gag to base a book around. Indeed there were elements like Gabriel and the Angels, who don’t feature in the book, that were going to feature in a sequel. They were brought forward into Season 1. So, even in the new episodes, we’re not entirely leaving behind the Terry Pratchett-ness of it all."

Season 2 focuses heavily on the relationship between unlikely duo Aziraphale and Crowley. We see them as they were in their youths at the beginning of the universe all the way through to the modern day. “They are utterly co-dependent,” Tennant said. “There’s no one else having the experience that they are having and they’ve only got each other to empathize with. It’s a very specific set of circumstances they’ve been dealt.”

Neil Gaiman “knows exactly where he wants to take” Good Omens season 3

As for whether we’ll see a third season, well, the season 2 finale definitely sets one up. At this point, we’re just awaiting a renewal announcement.

“Oh, Neil Gaiman knows exactly where he wants to take it,” Tennant teased. “If you’re working with people like Gaiman, I wouldn’t try to tamper with that creative void.”

All six episodes in Good Omens season 2 are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video!

David Tennant teases his return to Doctor Who!

Last we saw on Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor had regenerated into…David Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor years ago. He returns for three episodes later this year in what is poised to be the Doctor’s biggest adventure yet!

“It was like being given this delightful, surprise present,” Tennant said of returning to the iconic role. “Russell T Davies was back as showrunner, Catherine Tate [former on-screen companion] was back, and it was sort of like the last decade and a half hadn’t happened.”

After his three episodes are up, Tennant will pass the baton to Ncuti Gatwa, who will play the role on a more permanent basis. No doubt Tennant is impressed by what he’s seen of Gatwa so far. “Oh God, what a force of nature,” he said. “I’ve caught a little bit of him at work and it’s pretty exciting. I mean, what advice would you give someone? You can see Ncuti has so much talent and energy. He’s so inspired and charismatic.”

Doctor Who will return later this year. These are exciting times for fans!

Next. Neil Gaiman would be writing Good Omens season 3 “right now” if not for the strikes. dark
