With over 15 years of storytelling to its name, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an enormous, sprawling franchise. Add in myriad crossovers and multiversal mayhem, and it can be daunting to catch up from the beginning. Just ask Emma Corrin, who needed a primer on the “absolute mind****” of the MCU before working on Deadpool 3.
Corrin, who played Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crowni, plays a villain in Deadpool 3, although we don’t know exactly who. While the previous two Deadpool movies have been rooted in the X-Men franchise, the threequel is the first to take place in the main MCU continuity. Moreover, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is seemingly back from the dead to fight alongside Deadpool. Oh, and Jennifer Garner is returning as Elektra, because why not?
There’s an awful lot of multiversal chaos going on, but if it brings Deadpool and Wolverine together, we can’t complain.
The Crown alum Emma Corrin needed to do their homework for Deadpool 3
Turns out Corrin is a bit of a Marvel noob, so much of this is brand new to her. “Hands up, I’m not a Marvel person,” Corrin told Empire.
However, this isn’t the first comic book project Corrin has worked on. They previously played Esme Winikus on DC’s Pennyworth, a series about Batman’s loyal butler Alfred.
Needless to say, Corrin was required to do some homework on the Marvel universe before getting in on the action. “I’ve watched Spider-Man and Black Panther. I was like, ‘Look, you’re gonna have to debrief me into this.’ It’s such an intricate world. There’s so much to it, it’s an absolute mind-fuck. All the language and the Easter eggs, and this person is related to that person who did this, and this person came back and this person’s dead… it’s amazing.”
After catching up, however, Corrin has got a newfound respect for Marvel movies. “I really understand why it means as much as it does to so many people. It’s a phenomenon, and I feel really lucky to be part of it. Especially Deadpool, because I love the fact that it’s self-aware, and critical of its own inner-workings.”
Filming on Deadpool 3 is currently on pause due to the ongoing actors and writers strikes in Hollywood. The movie is currently slated to premiere in May 2024, but the likelihood of it making that premiere date looks increasingly slim.
