After much waiting, the second season of The Wheel of Time is on its way to Amazon Prime Video. When last we left off, the Aes Sedai sorceress Moiraine and the farm-boy-turned-magical-messiah Rand al’Thor had seemingly defeated the Dark One, a being of pure malevolence who threatens the order of the world. So that’s it, right? Story over?

Well, The Wheel of Time is based on a 14-book-long series, so probably not. Fans of Robert Jordan’s books know that the guy Rand defeated at the end of season 1 wasn’t actually the Dark One, but one of his lieutenants, specifically Ishamael, also known as Ba’alzamon, also known as Elan Morin Tedronai, also known as…actually, I’ll stop there cause otherwise we’d be here all day. Dude had a lot of names. In the show he was simply credited as “The Man,” but I’m gonna call him Ishamael.

Ishamael, played by Fares Fares, features in the opening scene of The Wheel of Time season 2, which Amazon just appended onto the end of the season 1 finale, “The Eye of the World.” You can boot up Amazon Prime Video and watch it right this second!

Ishamael the Forsaken creeps me out in first scene from The Wheel of Time season 2

The scene involves Ishamael meeting with a group of Dark Friends, who are people who follow the Dark One. A little girl — possibly the daughter of one of the Dark Friends — runs into the middle of their meeting after being frightened by the Trollocs outside. Ishamael interrupts the meeting to comfort her, picking her up and showing her that the Trollocs — who are working for him — aren’t that scary. He even lets her pet one, basically.

It’s a creepy little scene, although I feel like the swelling pounding scary music wasn’t needed; the scene is spooky enough on its own.

When The Wheel of Time books were coming out, it was standard practice to include the first chapter of the next book at the end of the present one, so this may be Amazon’s way of nodding to that. The Wheel of Time season 2 premieres on September 1.
