It’s been almost a year since House of the Dragon premiered on HBO. The Game of Thrones prequel series returned us to an earlier era of Westeros, when the Targaryens still sat the Iron Throne and their dragons ruled the skies. There were lot of dragons in the first season, and with a civil war looming, we’re expecting to see even more of them in season 2.

But there will be some returning dragons as well, such as Syrax and Caraxes, the mounts of Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen respectively. Some dragons who we mainly saw as fledgelings in season 1 will also be getting upgrades for season 2, since they’re all grown up now after the first season’s time jumps.

Enter this concept art of adult Vermax, the dragon ridden by Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys Velaryon. It’s pretty stunning:

Vermax will be all grown up in House of the Dragon season 2

This artwork is credited to creature designer Constantine Sekeris, who worked on the first season of House of the Dragon. Sekeris previously shared concept art of dragons like Syrax he did for season 1. This new artwork isn’t up on the artist’s Instagram like some of the previous ones; from the sound of things it was posted and then taken down, possibly because Sekeris wasn’t supposed to share behind-the-scenes images from House of the Dragon season 2 just yet.

Nonetheless, these images show that Vermax has gotten a pretty significant redesign. We mainly saw him as a young dragon during Episode 6, “The Princess and the Queen.” After that, we only got a few very brief glimpses of him as a young adult.

But with Jacaerys going on a long trip in season 2 to secure allies for his mother Rhaenyra, it makes sense that Vermax would get a makeover. Jace will be traveling to the Eyrie, Winterfell, and possibly even the Wall, so we’ll be seeing a lot more of Vermax this time around.

House of the Dragon season 2 is currently in the thick of filming. It’s expected to premiere on HBO and Max sometime in 2024.
