Andrzej Sapkowski published his short story The Witcher way back in 1986. Fast forward 37 years, and there are two collections of Witcher short stories, five books in The Witcher saga, a standalone novel, video games, a Netflix TV show, and even a Polish-language movie. You did good, Sapkowski.
And the fun doesn’t have to end there. It’s been 10 years since the Polish publication of Season of Storms, a most recent book in The Witcher series. Season of Storms is a standalone novel that follows Geralt of Rivia in his younger days as a professional monster hunter. Some fans have assumed that Sapkowski was done writing about witchers, but during a live-stream discussion with Ukrainian fans, he revealed he’s working on another volume.
“I never say these things because with me you never know,” Sapkowski said, per Redanian Intelligence. “Maybe I’ll do something, maybe I won’t. And so far, when I said that I would write something, and then I didn’t write it, people complained as if I had deceived them and as if I had lied.”
"That’s why I don’t like to talk about what I’m doing until I finish doing it. Because until I finish it, I don’t think it exists. But since I always make exceptions for Ukrainians, I will do it this time too. Yes, I’m working on a new book about witcher and quite diligently. It may take a year, but no longer."
Will the new Witcher book continue The Witcher saga?
So not only did Sapkowski confirm he’s working on a new Witcher book, he even gave us a timeframe: expect Geralt’s next adventure in around a year.
As for what the new book could be about, we don’t know. Will it be another standalone novel like Season of Storms, or will it follow the events of 1999’s The Lady of the Lake, which marks the end of The Witcher saga proper, The Witcher saga being the story about Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri we’re all currently watching on the Netflix show.
Speaking at a Polish Comic-Con in 2018, Sapkowski seemed to put the kibosh on the idea that was going to continue The Witcher saga proper. “The story is complete, the saga has been concluded, so if by any chance I write something in The Witcher universe, and I sure have such intention, it would probably be something like a prequel or a sidequel. Not a sequel,” he said.
That sounds pretty definitive, but then again, minds can change in five years. We’ll keep an eye out for more.
