This is a very exciting time for Doctor Who fans! With David Tennant returning to play the Doctor in its 60th Anniversary specials later this year and the impending the arrival of Fifthteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, there’s a lot to get excited about. The glut of content doesn’t end there, either: The BBC has just announced a brand new animated adventure, “The Underwater Menace,” based on a lost episode from back in the 1960s.

Doctor Who aired 253 episodes in its first six years on air, but 97 are missing from the archives. The episodes were lost due to the BBC’s policy of junking archive programming between 1967-1968.

That said, the BBC still holds audio tracks for many of the missing episodes. Therefore, instead of laying them to rest, the voice recordings are being rejuvenated in a form of a new animated adventure. The Underwater Menace was one of these lost story arcs. It occurred during Patrick Troughton’s run as the Second Doctor and co-stars Anneke Wills as Polly, Michael Craze as Ben and Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon.

What is “The Underwater Menace” about?

Airing in 1967, the original recordings for episodes two and three of The Underwater Menace were lost. “This story sees these characters navigate through their adventures in the underwater city of Atlantis where they meet with Professor Zaroff, who plots to destroy the Earth by draining the oceans,” the official synopsis released by the BBC reads.

A very brief teaser was also posted online. While it doesn’t show much, the animation style looks glorious as always. Take a look:

There’s 97 missing episodes out there. Re-making lost episodes could be a very exciting side-project for the BBC, providing fans with regular content during the long waits between new seasons!
