The Marvels director Nia DaCosta: “Superhero fatigue absolutely exists”
By Ashley Hurst
Later this year, the Marvel Cinematic Universee’s latest superhero trio — Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) — will team up in The Marvels. The movie promises to be an action-packed MCU flick.
However, amid recent fears that superhero fatigue — the notion that moviegoers will eventually get bored of the monotonous nature of superhero movies — is settling in, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has assured fans that her movie is unique enough to conquer it.
There’s no doubt that superhero fatigue is a real thing. Lately, the MCU hasn’t been hitting home runs the way it was a few years back. For instance, Disney+’s most recent MCU series, Secret Invasion, was the lowest-rated Marvel show to date.
“I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists,” DaCosta revealed to Total Film. However, she thinks her movie is different. “The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”
If the trailer is anything to go by, she’s not wrong. The Marvels looks to be bursting with life and light-hearted fun.
While it looks good, ultimately, box office returns will determine whether the superhero trend continues. The Marvels will premiere later this year on November 10.
The Marvels director is stressed out by Doctor Strange 2 lore
DaCosta is well tutored on all things superhero, and is even even out here critiquing aspects of the MCU. Most recently, she took aim at Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, saying the way incursions are explained in the movie go against comic lore. Do your homework, guys!
In the MCU, the term “incursion” refers to potential consequences of travelling between universes. At worst, incursions can cause universes to be wiped from existence. Here’s how Reed Richards puts it:
After watching Multiverse of Madness, DaCosta called the definition of incursions as explained by John Krasinski’s Reed Richards “very stressful to me.” Clearly she’s a huge nerd and earnestly wants to follow the lore of the comics, which is admirable.
