Outlander producer addresses lack of sex scenes in season 7
By Ariba Bhuvad
Outlander producer Maril Davis is explaining why the romantic, steamy scenes between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) have been few and far between in season 7. Those moments between the couple have been the heart of the show for years, but this latest season is a bit different.
While speaking with Insider, Davis shared that they are “not ignoring the intimacy,” but rather that there are “more stories to service this season.” Of course, there’s also the simple fact that nothing can quite match the romantic passion of Jamie and Claire’s first night together in season 1.
Whatever the reasoning, Outlander fans are definitely missing the passionate moments between Jamie and Claire. It just doesn’t feel the same, but luckily, the show has made up for it in other ways.
Why Outlander season 7 has fewer sex scenes
“Listen, there’s so much stuff you do in early seasons, you can’t necessarily replicate. We’re never going to have another ‘Wedding night,'” Davis said. “It’s just as the show evolves, different things come into play. Certain things don’t fit in the way they do in the books and it doesn’t naturally, organically get there. We’re certainly not ignoring the intimacy. It’s there, but we’re also trying to also show it sometimes in different ways.”
It certainly has presented itself in a number of other ways this season, as we’ve seen how committed Jamie and Claire are to each other when when they’re apart. They are a united front in the face of anything bad that comes their way.
In the book on which season 7 is based, there is a moment where Jamie and Claire slip away to have some sexy time in Ticonderoga. However, Davis and her team opted not to adapt that bit. “We just didn’t have that space and quite honestly, it just did not feel like part of that story,” Davis said. “We talk a lot about intimate moments needing to be organic to the story. And in the book, it’s easier just because there’s more space and more time to do things. Sometimes when things get condensed it’s not as easy.”
Season 7 contains material from the sixth, seventh and eighth Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon, so there’s a lot the team has to cram into the episodes. Storylines have to be condensed, pivotal moments need to be front and center, and plot points have to be cut. It’s not ideal, but it is in service of the series.
I’m certainly looking forward to the back half of the season, which is set to air in 2024. There is a lot at stake as the Frasers find themselves back in Scotland while Roger (Richard Rankin) makes the trip back through the stones to find Jemmy. Will everyone reunite again? Will Brianna be left in the present? So many questions; hopefully we get the answers soon.
