Hulu’s Predator prequel Prey is getting a Blu-ray and 4K UHD release!
By Daniel Roman
Exciting news for all my fellow Predator fans! It was announced this week that Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator prequel film Prey is getting a physical release on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD.
Set in 1719, Prey follows a group of Comanche warriors who come into contact with a Predator on the Great Plains. When aspiring hunter Naru (Amber Midthunder) discovers a trail of deaths that leads right back to the alien creature, she gets caught in a harrowing struggle to survive against the Predator’s advanced technology and imposing strength.
Predator sequels have a history for being hit or miss, but Prey received an incredibly warm reception from critics, audiences, and even stars from the original Predator movie. The film was nominated for six Emmys including Outstanding Television Movie, and was praised for its focus on authenticity and including Native American talent on both sides of the camera.
Prey physical release is coming, includes bonus features and deleted scenes!
The Prey physical release comes with a number of special features. 20th Century’s press statement notes that the features themselves will vary based on the format and in some cases the retailer; for example Best Buy is doing a premium quality steelbook edition, which we assume will have the most extras.
Here’s the list of special features that have been announced:
- Making of Prey: Step behind the scenes of Prey as the cast and crew explore the genesis of the project, how they gave authenticity to the story, the intense physical training the cast endured, and the effects work that brought the iconic Predator back to the screen.
- Prey FYC Panel With Cast & Crew: Go deeper into Prey with a lively panel discussion featuring director Dan Trachtenberg, actor Amber Midthunder, producer Jhane Myers, director of photography Jeff Cutter, film editor Angela M. Catanzaro and creature effects designer Alec Gillis.
- Alternative Opening Scene: Check out a scene that didn’t make the cut with commentary by Dan Trachtenberg.
- Deleted Scene: Big Warrior, Little Warrior: Ditto.
- Deleted Scene: Treetop Chase (pre-vis): You get the idea.
- Audio Commentary: Play Movie With Audio Commentary By Dan Trachtenberg, Amber Midthunder, Jeff Cutter & Angela M. Catanzaro.
All editions will also include the Comanche audio dub for the film, which is very much worth the time if you haven’t experienced Prey with that language track yet.
Streaming services rarely do physical releases of their films or television shows, so the fact that Prey is coming to Blu-ray and DVD is more than a little exciting. Predator and its sister series Alien have a long history of popular physical releases; it wouldn’t have felt right for Prey not to get one so it could stand alongside all the rest on collectors’ shelves.
“It’s happening,” Prey director Dan Trachtenberg wrote on Twitter X. “Because you guys demanded it — #PREY in 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. 2 hours of bonus content. Commentary, scene, previz, interviews. So glad you asked for it…so glad we got to make it!”
Prey releases in all formats on October 3.
