What if Shane killed Rick? What if Merle actually died when left for dead? What if Rick died? Fans of The Walking Dead have pondered and argued over these sorts of questions and hundreds more for years. And now, finally, we’re getting some answers in the form of a video game: The Walking Dead: Destinies!

Developed by Flux Games, The Walking Dead: Destinies is a choice-based video game coming out across many platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. According to IGN, the game will allow players to “rewrite the story” of the show between seasons 1-4. This includes the events that unfold on Hershel’s farm, the prison era, and the community of Woodbury — there’s tons of twists and turns to explore!

Watch the official announcement trailer below:

Unlike Telltale’s The Walking Dead video games, Destinies will feature much more robust gameplay. Players will be able to play as Rick, Daryl, Michonne and others. They’ll be required to use stealth and manage resources such as ammunition. And when players reach a key point in the plot, they will be given a choice of whether to take an alternate route that differs from the main timeline.

Of course, the voice actors are all different from the original actors. Listening to this new Rick Grimes’ voice is definitely going to take some getting used to. Moreover, the graphics leave a little to be desired. It looks like an Xbox 360 title, not a modern-day game.

Will The Walking Dead: Destinies be a success?

The Walking Dead franchise has seen mixed success with video games. There’s been disappointing games like Survival Instinct as well as numerous underwhelming mobile titles. On the other hand, Telltale’s The Walking Dead series is considered a masterpiece; Clementine’s story is still being told through a series of graphic novels written by Tillie Walden.

Given that The Walking Dead has already established itself as the perfect setting for a choice-based game, Destinies is already off to a great start. I just wish they’d invested more into the graphics and getting back original voice actors.

The Walking Dead: Destinies is expected to launch at $49.99.
