The second season of The Wheel of Time, Amazon’s show based on the books by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson, is almost here. Are fans excited to catch up with Rand, Moiraine, and the rest? Or was the first season enough for them?

I ask because the first season of the show received a mixed response. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, season 1 has an 81% fresh rating among critics and a 59% rotten rating among fans. In both cases, over half the viewers liked it, but critics gave it a B- while fans flunked it.

For my money, the first season was pretty good, although I did have some issues. In particular, the final two episodes of the season seemed a little flat compared to what came before, although that could be due at least in part to them being filmed near the start of the COVID pandemic, when studios had no idea what they were doing. The second season won’t have that issue, at least.

I’m curious to see how critics and fans react to The Wheel of Time season 2, which premieres on September 1. Amazon is dropping the first three episodes all on the same day. With eight episodes total, that’s almost half the season right at the top.

The second season is often where a show proves that it can go the distance or falls flat on its face. Time for The Wheel of Time to put up or shut up.
