Blacks and greens clash on the set of House of the Dragon season 2
By Dan Selcke
HBO continues to film the second season of House of the Dragon around Bourne Woods in England. At the moment, they’re shooting a major battle sequence those who have read George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood will see coming: the Battle at Rook’s Rest. We’ve already seen lots of photos and videos from this shoot, and they keep rolling in.
In summary, the Battle of Rook’s Rest involves a clash between a group of soldiers led by Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard for King Aegon I Targaryen; and men fighting for Lord Staunton, a crownlands nobleman loyal to Aegon’s half-sister Rhaenyra. Some dragons get involved on both sides, but today we’re looking at some of the ground combat between the soldiers.
Let’s check out some of the latest images from the set courtesy of @UnBoxPHD, who is doing a bang-up job of covering events. Everyone’s about to get medieval on everyone else’s ass:

In addition to Criston Cole, Alicent Hightower Gwayne will also be present at the Battle at Rook’s Rest, played by Freddie Fox. We’ve seen both actors, but today we introduce their stunt doubles:
I don’t know what the horses are named but they’re wearing the hell out of that armor.
And here’s Criston Cole’s stunt double taking a break. Let’s hope that coffee cup shows up onscreen to continue a proud Game of Thrones tradition. I assume he has little dots on his face so Fabien Frankel’s face can be inserted over it later.
Green soldiers fight for lives on the House of the Dragon set
And finally, shots of soldiers enduring an onslaught:
@UnBoxPHD says that the soldiers are defending themselves against a dragon, a losing proposition. Indeed, a dragon does eventually show up and start roasting people, although I also note arrows in their shields, so they’re getting it from human combatants as well.
The second season of House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and Max sometime in 2024. So far as we can tell, the Battle At Rook’s Rest will go down in Episode 4.
