Wait, James Gunn’s Superman movie isn’t about a “younger Superman” after all

Henry Cavill is out as Superman (and as The Witcher, he’s out as everything). Actor David Corenswet will be our new big screen Man of Steel, starring alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in a new movie written and directed by James Gunn: Superman: Legacy.

When this project was first announced, Gunn said that it would focus “on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.” Fair enough; Cavill is 40 years old at this point, so maybe he’s not the right actor to play a fresh-faced 20-something Superman.

That said, maybe not, because Gunn is now muddying the waters over on Threads, the new Twitter X competitor from Facebook Meta. (I swear, tech companies, would it kill you to just keep your names consistent?) “I was never making a ‘young Superman’ movie,” Gunn said in response to a question from a fan, “just a Superman movie!”

Superman will be somewhere between 15 and 1500 years old in Superman: Legacy

Okay, so Superman: Legacy won’t be about Superman’s time on the junior varsity track team or whatever. All the talk about “young” and “old” Superman has been weird, really, because at 30, David Corenswet is the same age that Henry Cavill was when his first Superman movie, Man of Steel, came out in theaters. And Corenswet hasn’t filmed Legacy yet, so by the time it comes out in 2025, he’ll be older than Cavill was for his debut. How much “younger” can his Superman really be?

Personally, I wonder if Gunn didn’t just say that thing about a “younger” Superman at the time to deflect criticism from people scandalized over Cavill’s exit, but really he just wanted to start fresh. Besides, he’s now moved on to deflecting criticism that the movie includes too many characters, including Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho. It’s anybody’s guess what controversy comes up next. #WhereIsKryptoTheSuperDog?
