WandaVision isn’t getting a season 2 (except it kind of is)

WandaVision was the first Marvel show to come out on Disney+, and several years later it remains one of the most universally acclaimed of the bunch. Starring Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlett Witch and Paul Bettany as Vision, the show was a trippy journey through television history that ultimately resolved into a heartbreaking setup for Wanda’s eventual turn to villainy in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Since WandaVision ended, many fans have wondered whether it will get a season 2 like Loki or if this was just a one-off limited series. While Wanda seemingly met her end in the Doctor Strange sequel, no one really stays dead in the MCU. If they want to bring Wanda back, there’s no doubt Marvel could find a way.

However, the recently announced physical release for WandaVision seems to confirm that the series is truly finished. Screenrant notes that WandaVision’s physical release is titled Marvel Studios’ WandaVision: The Complete Series. Compare that with the physical release for Loki, which is labeled Marvel Studios’ Loki: The Complete First Season. It doesn’t sound like WandaVision getting a follow-up.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos is “the second season of WandaVision

All that said, let’s not get too sad just yet. WandaVision felt more like an event limited series than most MCU shows; it’s hard to imagine how the series could recreate its themes and ideas in a follow-up. But even if Wanda and Vision don’t come back for a second season, the show is getting a spiritual successor with Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which sees Kathryn Hahn reprise her WandaVision breakout role as the witch Agatha Harkness.

Speaking to Berkshire Magazine a while back, Debra Jo Rupp (That ’70s Show) weighed in on Agatha: Coven of Chaos, dubbing it “the second season of WandaVision.” Rupp brought her particular brand of charm to WandaVision as Mrs. Hart, and she’s returning for Coven of Chaos.

"It’s the second season of ‘WandaVision’ for Marvel. It’s very much like American Horror Story, where each season is a whole new kind of a thing. I was shocked when they called me, because I really thought that would be it, and I was fine with that. But when they called, I got so excited because it’s a character I never get to play. She’s gonna be great fun."

Rupp didn’t expand on this, joking that she was “terrified” of the Marvel security detail, who she calls the “the most secretive people on the face of the Earth.”

Agatha: Coven of Chaos is expected to release sometime in 2024. Marvel Studios’ WandaVision: The Complete Series comes out on Blu-ray and 4K UHD on November 28.
