For six seasons, Rick and Morty has been a cornerstone of Adult Swim’s lineup; a foul-mouthed cartoon about a super-genius scientist and his hapless grandson that was eagerly embraced by a legion of fans, some of whom had a habit of taking things a bit too far. I can never forget the McDonald’s incident:

The show’s most recent scandal is an even bigger deal. Creator Justin Roiland, who voices both Rick and Morty, was charged with domestic violence and false imprisonment the other year, in addition to a lot of other stories about what a horror he was to work with. The charges were eventually dismissed, but the damage to his reputation had been done. Earlier this year, Adult Swim announced that it was parting ways with Roiland.

That meant recasting both of the title characters. We still don’t know who’s going to play them, but Adult Swim must have someone on the hook, because season 7 of Rick and Morty now has a premiere date of October 15 at 11:00 p.m., according to The A.V. Club. It’s expected to be available for streaming some months after.

Who is replacing Justin Roiland as the voices of Rick and Morty?

Last month at Comic-Con, Rick and Morty executive producer Steve Levy told fans that the show is “closing in on the end of our process of the recast…It’s soundalikes. The characters are the same characters.”

Notably, Levy said this after the SAG-AFTRA strike was called in mid-July, which raises some questions. If they still hadn’t found an actor to replace Roiland by then, even if they’ve found one now, how could they record new lines without being in violation of the strike?

Maybe Adult Swim is betting on the strike ending soon enough that the new actor (or actors) can still record their lines before the October premiere date? Maybe they’re replacing Roiland with an AI soundalike? Roiland did tell French magazine Premiere that season 7 would be unaffected the strike. So I don’t know what they’re doing over there.

Notably, Roiland was replaced on his Hulu animated show Solar Opposites by actor Dan Stevens. Maybe he’s involved in the Rick and Morty recast? Whatever’s happening, Rick and Morty season 7 premieres on October 15. This should be interesting…
