Tattoos of the Dragon

The Dragon, a messianic figure destined to either save the world or destroy it, is central to the mythology of The Wheel of Time. We know that the Dragon Reborn is Rand al’Thor, who in season 2 will spend a lot of time wishing it could be anybody else. That’s a lot of power and responsibility.

Different cultures have different legends about the Dragon. Among the Aiel people, there are stories about the Car’a’carn, the one who will one day lead all of the disparate Aiel clans. When one becomes the Car’a’carn, their arm is marked with a twisting dragon.

Several Wheel of Time fans have read that and took matters into their own hands…or forearms:

Okay, we’re going to make a hard turn into potential SPOILERS right now, so turn back if you haven’t read the books and don’t want to know a detail about what’s coming:

The symbol of the dragon is also used to mark men who can channel. They are known as Asha’man, the male version of the Aes Sedai. We haven’t yet met any Asha’man on the Amazon show.

Another popular symbol is the heron. An image of a heron appears on every heron-marked blade; if you wield one, it means you have peerless skill with a sword. One also appears on this fan’s arm:

Above we looked at the triple-wheel symbol, which appears at the start of many chapters in the books. But there are other chapter-starting symbols, like this gnarly image of a trolloc:
