Bonnie Wright, aka Ginny Weasley, isn’t holding back her thoughts on what it was like to play the iconic Harry Potter character. Potterheads know Ginny as the only daughter of Arthur and Molly Weasley and the sister to Harry’s best friend Ron. We met her during the first movie, and as she became a bigger part of the story, we saw her develop a crush on Harry, to whom she would eventually get married.

But that wasn’t the only thing Ginny did or should be known for. She was responsible for opening the Chamber of Secrets again and also fought alongside everyone in Dumbledore’s Army. Sadly, she went down as Harry’s wife and Ron’s sister, and there wasn’t much more to her than that.

Wright recently spoke about playing Ginny on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast Inside of You. “Sometimes that was a little disappointing because there were parts of the character that just didn’t get to come through because there weren’t the scenes to do that,” she said. “That made me feel a bit anxious or just frustrated, I guess.”

Playing Ginny in the Harry Potter movies made Bonnie Wright feel “frustrated”

As we all know, fans are quick to share how they feel about characters. It’s hard to separate fact from fiction, but in Bonnie Wright’s case, fans understood that Ginny’s lack of texture wasn’t her fault. “And when fans do share that disappointment and they do it in a way that are like, ‘We know it wasn’t you. We just wanted more of you.’ And that’s the same of every character. If only they could be five-hour-long movies,” she sshared.

While the Harry Potter films didn’t do their due diligence in giving Ginny more importance, there may be hope. There is a confirmed Max TV series in the pipeline, and perhaps that will give Ginny more time to develop as her own character.

We don’t know much about the upcoming series, but I hope that Warner Bros. Discovery goes in a different direction with it. Wouldn’t it be neat to have something like an animated series about the Deathly Hallows? Or a show about the founders of Hogwarts? There is so much material there. Maybe in the future?
