The cast and crew of House of the Dragon are not messing around when it comes to this big battle scene for season 2. They’ve been filming the thing for weeks in Bourne Woods in England. It will all go down in Episode 4 of the upcoming season, and I expect it to blow our socks off.

In brief, this battle begins after Criston Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard for King Aegon II Targaryen, marches an army to Rook’s Rest, a holdfast outside King’s Landing. The lord of Rook’s Rest, Lord Staunton, is loyal to Aegon’s half-sister Rhaenyra, who is contesting Aegon’s reign. He asks for help from Rhaenyra, who dispatches one of her dragonriders to the area. But Criston has a dragonrider of his own.

So dragons clash in the air while soldiers clash on the ground. It’s gonna be nuts, and I know that because the images and videos coming from the set are nuts.

I’m already thrilled by his House of the Dragon battle and I won’t see it for a year

The latest video comes from @housethedragons. It shows a horde of extras — some of them mounted on horses — charging across a field in full costume while screaming their lungs out. Watch it here.

Oh, and remember that the battlefield will be wreathed in dragonfire the whole time.

I don’t know if these are the greens or the blacks making a charge. I just know it looks awesome. It kind of puts me in the mind of that scene from “Battle of the Bastards” where Jon Snow stares down a wall of charging cavalry.

Will the House of the Dragon scene be as epic as that one? Who knows? But I definitely appreciate the cast and crew going to the trouble of staging this. It is not easy to do. Also thanks to all the people snapping pictures for us at home, something no one could do during the Battle of the Bastards. We could be watching history in the making!

Or not. We’ll have to see how it all goes down when House of the Dragon season 2 premieres on HBO and Max sometime in 2024. I know I’m psyched, though.

dark. Next. Take the Black: Targaryens, horsies and the Night’s Watch on House of the Dragon set
