Neil Gaiman explains why Aziraphale and Crowley kiss in Good Omens
By Ashley Hurst
Good Omens season 2 went down brilliantly with fans. It was bold, fun and surprising, quickly establishing itself as a worthy sequel to the original story. Of course, season 2 isn’t based on the original Good Omens book — that was adapted in its entirety in season 1 — but rather inspired by an idea that authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett had prior to Pratchett’s passing in 2015.
The season focuses heavily on the relationship between angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant). It chronicles the events in their story that shaped them, from the beginning of the world to present day. They’ve been through everything together.
Here’s your errant SPOILER ALERT. In the season finale, fans were taken aback by one moment in particular. When Aziraphale accepts a new job in heaven, he invites Crowley to rejoin the ranks of angels after millennia as a demon. Crowley refuses. Emotions run high and they share a rather abrupt kiss before parting, possibly for good. Fans were stunned. The internet went wild. Numerous fan theories were checked off.
A fan asked Neil Gaiman about that moment on Tumblr. “Why a kiss?” they asked. “I mean, I loved it and I was very emotional when it happened, but why? A particular reason?”
Gaiman was typically straightforward in his response. “Because nobody could argue with the kiss having happened,” he wrote. “It definitely happened and we are now in a world in which it happened.”
"If it hadn’t happened the story would have been different and it would have affected people watching it differently."
Good Omens 2 was never meant to be an ending, but rather a bridge into season 3. Gaiman is totally down and ready to get working on the third installment, but at the moment everyone is waiting for the green light from Amazon Prime. Given the writers and actors strikes in Hollywood, that could take longer than usual.
Pedro Pascal is a big Good Omens fan!
Fans of Good Omens are legion, and new fans are popping up everywhere. That includes Hollywood golden boy Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, The Mandalorian, and so on). Eagle-eyed fans have spotted him liking various Good Omens themed posts on Instagram.
And now fans are starting to dreamcast Pascal in the third season:
Given his hectic schedule, I doubt Pascal could find the time for Good Omens. But that said, he does seem to have some of the best time management skills in the world. Pedro Pascal as Jesus in Good Omens? Who says no?
