Our Flag Means Death is one of HBO’s latest innovations, a historical drama about the pirates of the Caribbean, with a twist: although the show sold itself as a sort of gritty comedy, what stole the show was a genuine romance between hapless “gentleman pirate” Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and the fearsome Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi. Our Flag Means Death was a wild ride. It was funny, it was heartfelt, it was extremely gay, and it quickly gained a loyal following.

And now it’s coming back for another season on Max. When last we left our favorite band of buccaneers, Stede had reconciled with his estranged wife, but in a horrible mix-up, gave Blackbeard (or “Ed,” as Stede calls him) the impression that he’d been abandoned by the love of his life. It ends up that Blackbeard doesn’t take rejection well. In the new trailer, he’s crashing weddings and wreaking havoc on the high seas:

Stede, for all we know, is unaware of this; he’s writing love letters and tossing them into the ocean in the vain hope that they find their destination. (And on a show this whimsical, they might.) Also, “I did a punch!”

Our Flag Means Death season 2 release date

Our Flag Means Death will drop the first three episodes of season 2 on Max on Thursday, October 5. As happened with the first season, it’ll be releasing multiple episodes per week, although the finale gets a day all to itself. Must be a barn-burner, that one.

This has nothing to do with anything, but honestly, streaming services, do you want to consider maybe just dropping one episode of a show per week? Actors and writers are both on strike in Hollywood, so you’re not making anything new; who knows how long your cache of content will last? Let’s stretch things out a bit, hmm?

But I only speak for myself here. I’ll be watching Our Flag Means Death with curiosity when it comes ashore.

Second season of Our Flag Means Death “doesn’t follow the expected route”. dark. Next
