2. The Faceless Men

The concept of the Faceless Men is not really an unsolved mystery, but rather a ‘What was the point of any of it?’ mystery. Arya Stark nearly died training to be a Faceless assassin over in Braavos, and finally, when she was about to be accepted as one, she gave it up to return to Westeros and tick names off her hit list. One could argue that her revenge on Walder Frey was a reasonable culmination point of that arc. But if that’s all that was meant to be, it was pretty underwhelming.

She used her combat skills in the Battle of Winterfell and quite symbolically killed the Night King with the same Valyrian steel knife that started a lot of trouble in the first season. But it still didn’t explain all the mystery surrounding the Faceless Men, the overarching point of their shapeshifting skills, or their faith in the Many-Faced God of Death. We did not get to see Arya use her cunning in any situation. The death of Littlefinger was as satisfying as it get, but all she really did was flick the knife over his throat. She did show up at King’s Landing as Daenerys turned it to ash, but she did absolutely nothing except…ride a horse.

1. The Prince That Was Promised

Perhaps the biggest unsolved mystery of Game of Thrones is the identity of The Prince That Was Promised. A recurring concept in the show, this prophecy stemmed from a dream Aegon the Conqueror had about one of his successors. As we have seen in House of the Dragon, every generation passed the prophecy down to the next, thinking their successor would be the one to bring the world out of the Long Winter. However, it never became clear in the TV show who that was supposed to be.

Jon Snow was an obvious candidate. Some expected Daenerys Targaryen claim the title, while others thought it would be her and Jon’s child. When the Khaleesi was pregnant with Drogo’s son, many expected him to be the Prince. It is also theorized that the prophecy could be about Arya Stark, who shut the eyes of the Night King and ended the Long Winter. The show came really close to pinning the title on a character multiple times but ended up not explaining it at all.
