Since the real thing is nowhere in sight, we asked AI what will happen in The Doors of Stone

The Doors of Stone, the third book in Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy, has been a long time coming. The second book in the trilogy, The Wise Man’s Fear, came out in 2011. The story of the genius bard Kvothe still has a long way to go before it wraps up. Perhaps fitting all of that into one book is why Rothfuss is taking so long to write the third book.

In any case, Rothfuss has been pretty quiet about The Doors of Stone over the years, so we have next to no way of knowing how far along he is. Maybe he’s nearly done. Maybe he’s written nothing beyond the title. All we know is that we aren’t reading it.

But where flesh and blood fail, perhaps cold hard steel can succeed. We asked OpenAi’s chatbot ChatPGT to predict what will happen in The Doors of Stone. Behold the predictions of your chrome overlord below:

ChatGPT predicts what will happen in The Doors of Stone

When we posed this question to ChatGPT, it cautioned that while it doesn’t have inside information, it can make predictions about The Doors of Stone “based on the previous books in the series and common fantasy storytelling tropes.” Here’s what it said:

  • Resolution of Kvothe’s Story: “The Doors of Stone” is expected to provide a resolution to Kvothe’s story. We might finally learn the truth behind the various mysteries he’s encountered, such as the Chandrian, his lost abilities, and his conflict with Ambrose.
  • The Kingkiller’s Chronicle: Kvothe’s transition into becoming the legendary figure known as “Kvothe the Kingkiller” might be explored in greater depth. This could involve his interactions with royalty, political intrigue, and the events that lead to his infamous reputation.
  • The Doors of Stone: The book’s title suggests that the mysterious doors mentioned in the series will play a significant role. These doors could lead to pivotal events or revelations that shape the climax of the story.
  • The Chandrian: The enigmatic Chandrian, a group of powerful and feared individuals, are likely to be a central part of the story’s resolution. Kvothe’s quest for revenge against them could culminate in this book.
  • The University: The University, where Kvothe studied and learned magic, might be revisited. Kvothe’s interactions with his mentors and his continued exploration of his magical abilities could feature prominently.
  • Relationships and Personal Growth: Kvothe’s relationships with Denna, Bast, and others could see development and resolution. His personal growth and how he comes to terms with his past could be central themes.
  • Epic Battles: Epic battles or confrontations, possibly involving the magic and skills Kvothe has acquired, could take place. This might tie into the legends and stories that have been woven throughout the series.

As usual, ChatGPT is pretty vague in its predictions. Also, it’s possible that The Doors of Stone may not wrap up the trilogy. At one point, Rothfuss described The Kingkiller Chronicle as a “million-word prologue” to some much bigger story. And how long might that one take to develop?
