Netflix has just debuted One Piece, its live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s phenomanally successful manga about a plucky teenager determined to become king of the pirates! The show is off to a great start, which is no surprise when you consider who performs the opening narration.

One Piece doesn’t have a ton of big names in it; the lead role of would-be pirate king Monkey D. Luffy is played by Iñaki Godoy. His young crewmates are also played mainly by young actors most people won’t know. But the show did secure a pretty big name to read the narration at the top of the show: Ian McShane.

“This is a world like no other: one brimming with mystery and teeming with danger, filled with hundreds of islands strewn across vast seas,” McShane says at the start of the premiere in his signature deep voice. “And throughout these seas are those who live according to their own rules, who seek a life of freedom and adventure. This is a world of pirates.”

Who is the narrator in Netflix’s One Piece remake?

McShane has been showing up everyone in your favorite series for years. He played Al Swearengen in Deadwood, Winston Scott in the John Wick movies, Septon Ray on Game of Thrones, and much more. It was definitely fun to hear him on One Piece.

McShane also played Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, so he has some experience with this pirate stuff. It would be a blast to see him show up in the flesh. Maybe in season 2…
