The Walking Dead was a special show. It was the number one show on cable for several years running, turning out 11 seasons of zombie-blasting entertainment. Now the story is continuing through a slate of spinoffs. The latest, Daryl Dixon, aims to reignite the magic of what made the early seasons of the mothership show so compelling.

As mentioned in our spoiler-free review of the show, Daryl Dixon is The Walking Dead universe as we’ve never seen it before. In the six-episode debut season, Daryl (Norman Reedus) washes up in France and tries to figure out a way to get back home to the United States. Naturally, he gets caught up in a plot that makes that difficult. Watch the trailer below:

Being set in a completely new part of the world with an all-new cast (besides Reedus), the show feels like a fresh start for the franchise. But executive producer Greg Nicotero also sees it as a way for the franchise to get back to its roots. “I think what was really the most important thing on Daryl Dixon was to go back to the DNA of what made the original first few seasons of The Walking Dead so good, which was keeping the stories singular and focused,” he told Polygon. “If you really think about the original, it was Rick searching for his family. We’ve gone back to those sort of building blocks.”

Daryl Dixon “has a big heart” in his new Walking Dead spinoff

In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Daryl is tasked with escorting Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), a boy who is believed to be the messiah, to northern France. He could quite easily say no, but he has a sense of duty. “I think Daryl feels like there’s more for him to do. Daryl knows that there are other people in the world out there that need him,” Nicotero said. “Daryl really does have a big heart, and would do anything for people, even though he may start for the wrong reasons. He can’t help himself.”

We’ll say one thing for Daryl: He’s a good person to have on your team.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premieres on Sunday, September 10 on AMC, with new episodes airing weekly.
