Lan “changes” in The Wheel of Time season 2
By Dan Selcke
In the first season of The Wheel of Time, the Aes Sedai sorceress Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) was joined at the hip with her warder Lan (Daniel Henney), who served as her bodyguard and constant companion. They memorably took a non-sexual bath together in the first-ever episode. Platonic besties, right here.
But Moiraine is feeling out of sorts after being cut off from the One Power, which means she can no longer use her magic abilities. So far as we know, she hasn’t severed the magical bond that ties her and Lan together, but she has pulled away from her warder, going off on her own while he spends time with the Aes Sedai Alanna (Priyanka Bose) and her two warders.
In the first season, the warder Stepin takes his own life after the death of his Aes Sedai, Kerene. As you can see in the clip below, Lan probably isn’t in danger of doing that, but he is definitely feeling out of sorts:
Lan becomes “different” in The Wheel of Time season 2
This clip is from the new episode of The Wheel of Time that will premiere on Amazon Prime Video tonight, “Daughter of the Night.” What does a warder do when he has no one left to ward? Actor Daniel Henney talked to Collider about where Lan’s head is at.
“They need time apart,” Henney said of Lan and Moiraine. “Especially for him – I think it’s more for him. I’ve thought about this a lot, and for Lan, Season 2 is a very formative season for him. He needed time alone, and then he goes and spends some time with some other people and with some other cultures, and he changes. He’s different. You’ll see him physically different, you’ll see him mentally different, and it helps him to get back on the road to where he needs to be. Just like anything, you need to go through some stuff to build calluses.”
The second season of The Wheel of Time is roughly adapting the second and third books in Robert Jordan’s series: The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn. Lan is pretty far off the beaten path, at least where those two books are concerned. It’s not entirely clear where his story is going.
We’ll find out more when “Daughter of the Night” premieres later this evening.
