The original Game of Thrones only had a few Targaryen names to remember: Viserys, Aerys, Aemond and of course Daenerys Targaryen. The prequel show House of the Dragon serves up tons of new ones: Rhaenyra, Daemon, Aemond, Aegon, Helaena, Rhaenys, Daeron, Baela, Rhaena…and that’s without getting into all the Velaryon names. That’s a lot of “ae” sounds for one show.

Targaryen names have their roots in the Valyrian language, which was sketched out by George R.R. Martin in his Song of Ice and Fire books and further developed by conlanger David J. Peterson for Game of Thrones. It definitely has a distinctive sound to it.

Ever wondered what your name would be if you were a Targaryen? Redditor I_Am_Become_Dream has come up with a very cool chart that lets you do just that. Check it out below:

"What’s your Targaryen name? by u/tyrion2024 in HighValyrian"

What is your Targaryen name?

Alright, so my first initial is “D” and I was born in March, so my Targaryen name is…Daemond.

Daemond? That’s basically Diamond! My name is Diamond Targaryen! I accept this.

I like how the chart accounts for how common the name “Aegon” seems to be in the Targaryen family; if your name begins with a vowel, your Targaryen name starts with “Ae.” Tell us what your Targaryen name would be in the comments.

We’ll meet more Targaryens when House of the Dragon returns for its second season on HBO and Max sometime in 2024.
