The 60th Anniversary special of Doctor Who is not far away! The three-episode event will see David Tennant return to the TARDIS as the Fourteenth Doctor. Tennant took on the role as the 10th Doctor in 2005 and stuck around for three seasons, quickly becoming one of the most beloved Doctors ever. For the 60th Anniversary, the BBC is bringing Tennant back for one final adventure. The hype is real!

Tennant and showrunner Russell T. Davies had always talked about the idea of bringing the Tenth Doctor (now the Fourteenth Doctor) back into the fold. This return was brewing for some time before they found the perfect opportunity in the 60th Anniversary, which will pave the way for the arrival of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. The specials will also mark the return of companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), whose story was always left open-ended; she must never recognise the Doctor, lest there be dire consequences. Seems the writers have some unfinished business with Donna’s story arc.

“I realized that there was third act to be written, and it was so much fun writing it,” Davies told Entertainment Weekly about getting to work with Tennant and Tate again. “On a really simple level, it’s working with two of the best actors in the world. I love them. I love them as friends. I love their presence. I’m really interested to push the Doctor and Donna into things they’ve never done before.”

David Tennant: Returning to Doctor Who was “joyous”

Speaking prior to the actor’s strike, Tennant rhapsodized about the “joyous” opportunity to step back into the TARDIS. “Just an unexpected treat to get to revisit something that had been such a lovely wonderful experience 15 years ago,” he said. “To get to have another proper runaround, in an albeit slightly different long coat, was a joy I never really imagined.”

Since so much time has passed, Tennant hopes that his energy matches the chaos of his original run. “I just hope I look as fast as I did in the 2000s,” he said.

Doctor Who’s three-episode 60th Anniversary begins in November. Prepare for what looks to be one of the Doctor’s biggest adventures yet!
