Amazon exec teases the future of the expanding The Boys universe
By Ashley Hurst
The Boys is a superhero show that pokes fun at the superhero genre. Known for its vulgarity, the gripping story keeps fans invested.
And like every superhero universe, The Boys is on the verge of expanding. Showrunner Eric Kripke is keen to continue to develop spinoffs, and he has the full backing of Amazon Prime Video!
The first The Boys came in 2022 with The Boys Presents: Diabolical, an animated anthology series. While certainly not a failure, the ratings weren’t a match for the main show. Next up is Gen V, a show following a group of super-powered college students battling it out to become the next member of the Seven. As you’d expect, things get pretty brutal.
Amazon is hoping for “many more seasons” of The Boys spinoff Gen V
Is Gen V just the beginning for live-action spinoffs? According to Amazon executive Vernon Sanders, the network is fully committed to developing the The Boys universe indefinitely. “I will say this: Eric has had a vision for what this all leads to for years now, and we’ve been in an ongoing conversation about what comes next,” Sanders told Entertainment Weekly.
"So, it’s probably premature to talk about that beyond saying we believe in Eric, and if Eric is interested in continuing the story, we’ll be the first ones in line to really work with him on what that is. But right now we’re super focused on Gen V and an amazing season 4 of The Boys, which I think is going to blow fans away."
Kripke isn’t working alone in developing The Boys franchise. He’s got a master team beside him, including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Sanders believes that Kripke, Rogen and Goldberg are fully invested in continuing to work on the extended universe. “I think Seth and Evan and Eric are genuinely interested in it,” he said. “I think we’ve been probably the ones who’ve been wanting to be careful not to over expose. So, once we committed to Gen V, we really wanted that to be the next thing out. And once we have it out and get a chance to see how everyone’s reacting to it, we can start talking about, like I said, what comes next.”
"We think that if fans respond the way we’ve responded to Gen V we will have many more seasons of the show. In the master plan between Eric and Michele and Tara, I think these shows will continue to talk to each other in fun ways."
Gen V will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 29. Not long now!
