Stranger Things season 5 is “as big as any of the biggest movies that we see”
By Ashley Hurst
Every season of Stranger Things seems to up the ante from the season before. When the show began, it was set exclusively in the quaint town of Hawkins, Indiana. Since then, it’s traveled to Chicago, California, the Soviet Union and the depths of the dark dimension known as the Upside Down, where the monsters have gotten more and more menacing year on year.
As we look ahead to the fifth and final season of the beloved Netflix series, the scale is only going to get bigger. As director Shawn Levy says, it can stand tall next to any blockbuster movie.
“There’s no way to be contiguous with Season 4, and not, frankly, expand scale and depth,” Levy told Total Film. “It’s major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series. Stranger Things 5 is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see.”
At times, Stranger Things season 4 felt like a movie in disguise as a TV show. I mean, “Chapter 9: The Piggyback” was over two hours long. Levy’s comments seem to imply that we can expect more feature-length episodes in the final season.
Stranger Things drops new teaser!
Netflix has never been shy about marketing Stranger Things ridiculously early; look no further than the Hopper teaser for season 4, dropped well over two years before the new episodes aired. The show’s official Twitter X page page recently posted a somewhat cryptic teaser showing ice cream parlor Scoops Ahoy in debris in a demolished Starcourt Mall.
While some fans are ardently suggesting that this is a teaser for season 5, others are adamant that it’s a cheeky bit of marketing for a new brand of Stranger Things-themed ice cream. This makes sense, since there is a “Scoops Ahoy” brand of ice cream coming to Walmart shortly.
Like most other TV shows, filming on Stranger Things 5 has been put on hold until the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are resolved. This has naturally affected the intended release date. Originally planned for release in 2024, fans should now expect Stranger Things season 5 to premiere sometime in 2025.
