Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on the same weekend back in July, leading to many a good-natured snicker as movie-goers contemplated seeing Greta Gerwig’s plastic fantasia and Christopher Nolan’s heavy-handed biopic back to back. Over two months later and these two movies are still setting box office milestones. The summer of Barbenheimer continues.

Of the two movies, Barbie has been the more successful, racking up $1.4 billion at the international box office to date. That includes $626 from the United States, which actually puts it ahead of The Avengers, which collected $623 million when it came out in 2015. Beating out one of the cornerstones of the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe…not bad, Barbie.

That said, Barbie is still behind when it comes to the international box office. Worldwide, Barbie remains shy of The Avengers, which has collected $1.52 billion. Still, it’s not that far away. We’ll see what the future (and Oscar season) brings.

Over two months later, Barbenheimer still cannot be stopped

Speaking of Oscar season, odds are that Oppenheimer will get quite a few nominations, and that’s on top of its tremendous financial success. According to Box Office MojoOppenheimer has brought in $912 million to date. It’s squeaked past Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 movie about the life of Queen singer Freddie Mercury. That means Oppenheimer is officially the most successful biopic of all time.

Who would have thought that people would be more interested in a movie about the father of the atomic bomb than one about the guy who sang “We Will Rock You”? Are there any famous musicians who also created weapons of mass destruction? Cause that movie would be a guaranteed hit.

The success of these movies comes at a strange time for Hollywood, as actors and writers are still on strike after months of demonstrating. If studios want more hits like this, they’ll have to come to the table and bargain. We’ll be keeping an eye on everything.
