Amazon is joining other streaming services in including “limited advertisements” on its platform…unless you pay to avoid them. The company said on Friday that they’re doing this to keep pace with competitors like Netflix. Amazon hopes the ads will help them “continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time.”

But how much will it cost the consumer, and how long are the ads?

How long are the ads on Prime Video, and how will it cost to avoid them?

We have many questions about what these changes will entail, especially about cost and the length of time these ads will run. Amazon, unfortunately, did not reveal much information, but they did say that its shows and movies will have “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.”

If you are not about the ad life, you can buy the ad-free tier for an extra $2.99/month starting next year. As you may already know, Prime Video is included in the annual Amazon Prime subscription, which costs $139. So I’m guessing this additional $2.99 per month is tacked onto that.

One thing that has become clear over the last year is that streaming services don’t care about increasing subscribers as much as they do about increasing revenue. That’s what investors are demanding, even if it comes at the cost of losing subscriptions.

While Amazon is just now deciding to do this, Disney+ has increased prices twice in less than a year, Hulu is set to increase its monthly ad-free subscription cost, and Peacock had its first price hike ever in July.

And let’s not forget that Netflix has been rolling out their plan to ensure that family members and friends aren’t all using the same account anymore; they want everyone to pay for their own. It appears that has worked in their favor and caused subscriptions to go up rather than down, so there is a method to this madness!
