In a world where the superhero genre is dominated by Marvel and DC, it can be difficult for other projects to stand out. However, in recent years, Amazon Prime Video has managed to get a foot in the door with subversive superhero shows like The Boys and Invincible, which have become instant hits.
After a successful first season in 2021, Invincible is returning in November following a long wait of over two years, and according to creator Robert Kirkman, it’s going to stay on our screens for potentially up to eight seasons. Strap in, folks, this is gonna be a wild ride.
Of course, eight seasons is entirely hypothetical at the moment; the show has only been renewed up to season 3. That said, if Amazon wants to cover the entire comic — which ran for 144 issues — Kirkman sees 7-8 seasons as an ideal target.
Robert Kirkman wants Invincible to run as long as Game of Thrones
“I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough,” Kirkman told Polygon. “But there could be some things we move through a little faster, some things we expand. If we’re fortunate enough to go for a good long time, I think that would be enough to cover the entire comic.”
Moreover, Kirkman believes the show presents the perfect opportunity to expand upon the core story from the comics. “And there are some things along the way that didn’t get into the comic that I’d like to do,” he added. “I think it’d be cool to have some episodes here and there that are completely original. So that’s part of the plan moving forward.”
As The Walking Dead fans will tell you, Kirkman is totally open to adding new and exciting content to his stories when they’re translated to the small screen.
The first four episodes of Invincible season 2 premiere on November 3 on Amazon Prime Video. The series will return for the second half of season 2 in early 2024.
