We’ve gotten a lot of great new TV over the past several years, and people want more. According to MarketWatch, Guinness World Records has teamed up with Parrot Analytics to give us an idea of what shows people most want to see as we look forward to 2024. Take a look at some of the findings:

  • Most in-demand comedy: The Big Bang Theory (CBS) with 45.9 times the global average
  • Most in-demand soap opera: Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (Star Plus) with 28.8 times the global average
  • Most in-demand anime: Attack On Titan (MBS) with 68.2 times the global average
  • Most in-demand TV series debut: House of the Dragon (Max) with 114.9 times the global average
  • Most in-demand superhero series: The Boys (Amazon Prime Video) with 55.3 times the global average
  • Most in-demand romantic drama: Bridgerton (Netflix) with 33.9 times the global average
  • Most in-demand reality show: RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1) with 22.1 times the global average
  • Most in-demand drama: Stranger Things (Netflix) with 104.3 times the global average
  • Most in-demand documentary: Formula 1: Drive To Survive (Netflix) with 19.2 times the global average
  • Most in-demand children’s show: Spongebob Squarepants (Nickelodeon) with 47.9 times the global average

“Demand” here is measured by a variety of factors, including how often people talk about a show on social media, which shows are attracting “high-value customers” to a streaming service, which series are retaining high-risk customers for that service, and which shows are acquiring customers at the lowest cost for the service.

House of the Dragon is the most in-demand new series

It used to be so easy to judge how well a show was doing: you just looked at how many people were watching, and then advertisers would pay more to run commercials during episodes. Things are more complicated in the age of streaming, but metrics exist, and some shows still put more butts in seats than others.

House of the Dragon is on top of the pile when it comes to new shows, which isn’t a big surprise; Game of Thrones gave that show a large built-in audience, and House of the Dragon was strong enough to keep and build on it. The most in-demand superhero show is The Boys on Amazon Prime Video, which has to rankle the folks at Disney pumping out Marvel series on Disney+. And Stranger Things is the most in-demand drama overall.

House of the Dragon and The Boys are both on schedule to return for new episodes next year, although Stranger Things may take a bit longer in light of the ongoing writers and actors strikes. The sooner those are resolved, the sooner Hollywood can go back to making more shows and generating more demand.
