Netflix drops teasers for Scott Pilgrim, Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider and more!
By Daniel Roman
Netflix wants you to know that if you want more adult animated shows, they are the platform to watch. The streamer has already had some big hits in this area like Arcane and Castlevania, and if the new slate of shows that was unveiled today as part of Netflix’s Drop01 Twitch event are any indicator, we’ll be enjoying plenty more before long.
First and perhaps most importantly, Netflix has released the full first seven minutes of its upcoming Castlevania spinoff, Castlevania: Nocturne:
Vampires run amuck in Boston in Castlevania: Nocturne
Castlevania: Nocturne is the story of Richter Belmont, the protagonist of the hit 1993 video game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (and who shows up in its more famous sequel, Symphony of the Night). These first seven minutes are the cold open for the series, where we see his tragic beginnings. Belmonts fighting vampires in Boston, sign me up!
All eight episodes of Castlevania: Nocturne drop this Friday, September 29.
Netflix’s Devil May Cry anime series teaser
Netflix also released the first-ever teaser for its upcoming Devil May Cry anime series from Studio Mir and Adi Shankar.
Devil May Cry is a series of video games from Capcom about a half-human, half-demon devil hunter named Dante who slices and dices creatures of darkness with a very large sword, two guns, and lots of style. This isn’t the first time that the series has gotten the animated treatment; it was also made into a well-received Japanese anime in the early 2000s.
This one is really exciting to me, because Devil May Cry feels like a perfect fit for Netflix’s style of anime. Think Castlevania, but more irreverent and set in modern times. There’s no release date yet for Devil May Cry.
Hayley Atwell plays Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft
Next up, another brief teaser for a video game series making the leap to animation: Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. This one is based on the Tomb Raider games, specifically the recent Survivor trilogy of games, which consists of Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018). We don’t know for sure if it’s outright adapting the excellent story of those three games, but we know it’s set in the same continuity. The giveaway is Lara’s trusty bow and arrow, which feature heavily in those games.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft features Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft, which is about as close to perfect casting as I can imagine. The show is being produced by Powerhouse Animation, which also made Castlevania.
Like Devil May Cry, no release date has yet been set for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft as of yet.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off trailer on Netflix
Last but certainly not least, Netflix has also given us a fresh new clip from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. This show features the return of the cast from the 2010 cult classic movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
In the clip above, Scott (Michael Cera) goes to some extreme measures in order to arrange a meeting with Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). And by “extreme measures,” I mean he orders a DVD from Netflix after finding out that Ramona has taken a job as a delivery person.
This animated series looks just as fun and charming as you’d hope, combining the wonderful cast from the movie with the art style of the comics by Bryan Lee O’Malley.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off comes out on Netflix on November 17.
