Albus Dumbledore’s 5 most badass moments from the Harry Potter movies
4. Dumbledore avoids arrest
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Professor Dolores Umbridge is the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, but she spends more time harassing students and enforcing the draconian rules set by Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge than actually teaching. So Harry starts giving lessons to those willing to learn to fight against the dark arts. The people who participate in these lessons name themselves members of Dumbledore’s Army.
One day, Umbridge finds out and brings Harry to Dumbledore’s office demanding he be kicked out of Hogwarts. However, Dumbledore insists that he alone is responsible for the club’s activities, citing that it is, after all, named Dumbledore’s Army.
Fudge then orders the Aurors Kingsley Shacklebolt, who is actually a secret Dumbledore loyalist, and John Dawlish to arrest the Hogwarts headmaster and take him to wizard prison Azkaban to await trial.
Dumbledore calmly admits that he thought this might happen, and tells the Ministry officials that he does not intend to let himself be arrested. Dumbledore then gives Harry a wink before his pet phoenix Fawkes flies over his head and they both disappear from the room in a blast of flames.
This is one of my favorite Michael Gambon moments because even under pretty bad circumstances, he perfectly conveys to the audience that Dumbledore is powerful enough to not care about a room full of powerful wizards ready to take him by force. The nonchalant delivery of the line, “I though we might hit this little snag,” is a chef’s kiss.
